Reupholster or replace? Here’s how we think about it

Not everything should be reupholstered, and we’ll always tell you honestly when a piece isn’t worth the investment. But a few things tip the scale toward reviving what you already own.

Reupholster when the bones are good. Older furniture is often built better than what you’ll find new today, solid hardwood frames, real joinery, eight-way hand-tied springs. If the frame is sturdy and comfortable, the fabric is the only thing that’s aged. That’s a very fixable problem.

Reupholster when it fits your space and your story. A piece that’s exactly the right scale for your room, or one that carries a little family history, is hard to replace. New fabric lets you keep the piece and the memory while it looks completely current.

Replace when the frame is failing. If the structure is cracked, wobbly, or was inexpensive to begin with, the labour may outweigh the value. We’ll say so.

The honest rule of thumb: good frame, tired fabric equals reupholster. Poor frame, any fabric equals start fresh. We’re happy to look and tell you which one you’re holding.
